Day 17: The Importance of Chewing

July 9, 2008

Digestion starts in the mouth. Especially carbohydrates (sugars, starches) start to break down in the mouth through the enzyme amylase found in saliva. I have actually known that for a long time. During the last few days, however, I started to really notice the importance of chewing and insalivating (is that a word?). Just swallowing juice often leads to an uncomfortable and gurgling stomach. If I thoroughly “chew” the juice, however, that problem does not occur.

  1. I am on day 5 and was searching for an answer to the gurgling. I know that I am supposed to chew juices and smoothies but don’t think that I have been doing a very good job on that the last couple days. Thanks for this post! Please keep blogging, it is wonderful to hear the progression and changes you are seeing. Congratulations on making it so far already!
